Route-check prompts

Common risks and what we usually ask first

Common risks

  • Assuming the country name alone is enough to determine the route.
  • Treating apostille as proof that the document contents are true.
  • Ignoring a receiving authority instruction that uses different route wording.
  • Treating a private signed document as if it can go directly to DFAT.

What we usually need first

  • Issuing country and destination country.
  • Document type and whether it is a public document, private signed document, or copy-based file.
  • Any wording from the receiving authority that mentions apostille, authentication, attestation, or legalisation.
  • Document type and current document form.

Route Logic

Pathway depends on destination. Hague destinations usually use apostille; non-Hague destinations usually require authentication plus consular legalisation (where applicable).

Hague Route

Apostille is typically used for Hague Convention destinations as a simplified legalisation pathway.

Non-Hague Route

Authentication plus consular legalisation may be required for non-Hague destinations, subject to destination rules.
